Subject: Enterprise Linux Version 4.2.3 for routers available

Version 4.2.3 of ImageStream's Enterprise Linux is now available as a general
availability (GA) release for all ImageStream router customers.

This software release is provided at no charge to all ImageStream customers.
Version 4.2.3 is a maintenance release and recommended for all customers who
wish to run the latest GA release.

This release note documents commands and features added between Version 4.2.2
and Version 4.2.3.

----------------------------

New Features in Version 4.2.3

ZMODEM Software Distribution Update Option Added

Version 4.2.3 supports the use of ZMODEM, XMODEM or YMODEM file transfers over
serial console, modem, telnet or SSH connections. Terminal programs such as
SecureCRT, minicom or HyperTerminal that support ZMODEM transfers can now be
used to update the router's software distribution. This option provides users
with the ability to manage software releases on routers with no network access,
or routers installed on networks with no available Internet access, SSH, FTP or
Web server.

DHCP Client Support Added

Version 4.2.3 supports assigning an IP address to any router interface via a
DHCP server. Enterprise Linux now includes a DHCP client that can request and
assign an IP address to an interface using the "ip address dhcp" command in the
router's interface configuration file (wan.conf). Detailed information on this
command is outlined in the router installation manual.

DHCP Relay Client Support Added

Version 4.2.3 supports using the router as a DHCP relay agent for a central DHCP
server. Enterprise Linux now includes a DHCP relay client that can request an IP
address from a central DHCP server on behalf of remote clients and relay the
DHCP reply. Detailed informaton on the configuration of DHCP relaying is
outlined in the router installation manual.

TransPort Router Ethernet Driver Performance Improved

Version 4.2.3 adds a new version of the software driver for the on-board
Ethernet ports included with the TransPort. The new driver improves stability
under heavy loads, and increases performance significantly, both in terms of
latency and total throughput.

530 Series DS3/E3 Cards Memory Efficiency Improved

The version of SAND included with Version 4.2.3 uses more efficient memory
allocations when the interface is initialized. The smaller memory allocations
decrease memory usage with the 530 series DS3/E3 cards by more than 50%.

IGMP Membership Settings Updated

The settings for multicast IGMP group memberships in Verison 4.2.3 have been
changed. Previous releases supported only 20 multicast groups per socket.
Version 4.2.3 supports 50 memberships by default. Users with large OSPF
configurations should be able to support more than two dozen OSPF interfaces in
a single area with the default value. The setting for maximum IGMP memberships
is configurable to support additional interfaces if necessary.

bwinit/badd Quality of Service Utility Updated

ImageStream's bwinit/bwadd Quality of Service utility now supports Stochastic
Fair Queues with the addition of the "--fair-queue" or "--sfq" option. Version
4.2.3 supports the addition of this keyword to a bandwidth limit using the
CLASSIFY method. This method is outlined in the Technical Notes section of the
ImageStream Support Web site and in the router installation manual. Stochastic
Fair Queues ensure that data is shared more equitably among multiple users in a
single bandwidth class.

FTP Backup and Restore Utilities Support Alternate Filenames

Version 4.2.3 supports the use of alternate filenames when backing up or
restoring configurations via FTP. Previous releases required the use of
ISisConfig.tar.gz as the configuration archive when using the FTP backup or
restore options.

ZMODEM Backup and Restore Support Added

Version 4.2.3 supports the use of ZMODEM, XMODEM or YMODEM file transfers over
serial console, modem, telnet or SSH connections. Terminal programs such as
SecureCRT, minicom or HyperTerminal that support ZMODEM transfers can now be
used to backup configurations from or restore configurations to an ImageStream
router. This option provides users with the ability to manage configurations on
routers with no network access, or routers installed on networks with no
available SSH, FTP or Web server.

T1/E1 Channelization, SoftCell ATM T1 IMA Support Added for 530 Series T1/E1/J1
Cards

The version of SAND included with Enterprise Linux 4.2.3 includes full support
for channelization of T1s and E1s on the 530 Series T1/E1/J1 cards. Version
4.2.3 also includes support for ImageStream's SoftCell ATM T1 IMA software on
530 Series T1/E1/J1 Cards.

Boot Loader Program Updated

The LILO boot loader used with ImageStream Enterprise Linux has been updated to
Version 22.6.1 to support a new hardware revision of ImageStream's Gateway
Router.

The following bugs have been fixed in Version 4.2.3:

530 Series DS3/E3 Cards Report Stuck Transmit Queue

Version 4.2.3 fixes an intermittent problem with a stuck transmit queue error on
530 series DS3/E3 cards. In previous 4.2 releases, the 530 series DS3/E3 cards
could periodically encounter transmit queue problems, causing protocol status to
drop on the port. A restart of SAND was required to fix this problem. Version
4.2.3 corrects this queue problem.

Statistics Program Does Not Track SSL/OpenVPN Tunnels' Protocol Status

The version of the interface statistics ("stats") program included with Version
4.2.3 correctly sets the protocol status of SSL/OpenVPN tunnels. Previous
releases did not check the proper status flag on the tunnel, and would not
display the protocol in a down state when the tunnel was not active. Version
4.2.3 corrects this behavior. This issue related only to the display of tunnel
protocol status and did not affect the operation of SSL/OpenVPN tunnels.

PPPoE/PPPoA Server Makes RADIUS Requests With Duplicate IDs

ImageStream's PPPoE/PPPoA server included in previous Enterprise Linux releases
made requests to RADIUS servers using duplicate IDs when the router received
simultaneous authentication requests from different interfaces. Version 4.2.3
corrects this behavior.

530 Series DS3/E3 Cards Report Null Pointer Check Error

Version 4.2.3 fixes a problem with 530 series DS3/E3 cards related to the stuck
transmit queue error also corrected in the 4.2.3 release. In previous 4.2
releases, the driver for the 530 series DS3/E3 cards failed to check for a null
pointer error during transmit queue problems. This missing check could cause
the router port to stop functioning, or cause the router to encounter a series
kernel error. Version 4.2.3 correctly checks for this condition.

PPPoE/PPPoA Server Uses Wrong Source IP When No IP Pool Is Configured

ImageStream's PPPoE/PPPoA server included in previous Enterprise Linux releases
used an invalid source IP address when replying to authenticated PPP users when
the router's configuration did not include an IP pool command. Version 4.2.3
corrects this behavior.

GateD Will Not Reload With Warnings Present

Version 4.2.3 corrects a problem with the 'gdc' utility used to manage
ImageStream's GateD dynamic routing software. Version 4.2.2 included additional
checks to prevent users from reloading GateD with an errored configuration.
The sanity checks incorrectly prevented users from reloading functional
configurations with warning messages. Version 4.2.3 properly allows GateD to be
reloaded when only warning messages are present.

Quality of Service Utility Sets HTB Default Class

The bwinit and bwadd utilities included in Version 4.2.2 set the default class
for HTB queues to 2 when a default class was present. Version 4.2.3 removes the
default class setting in all cases.
